Today in class we started reading a new poem. This poem really stuck out to me compared to the other poems because it was spoken directly to someone else. In the poem, a mother was telling her son how to push through the hardships in life and I really liked it. When we started annotating the poem as a class, I realized how each word also represented another issue or thing that the mother had to overcome. To me, the poem was about segregation and how the mother had to push through many unfair challenges in life and was teaching her son to do so as well.
